Bravest Woman In America

Each time I read The Bravest Woman In America to my daughter, my eyes would well up with tears and my heart burst with emotion.  It’s the true story of Ida Lewis, born February 25, 1842, who made her first sea rescue at age 16.  One winter evening, she spotted four boys having a bit of fun who capsized their boat.  Ida rowed out to the boys  and one by one, she grabbed each one and brought them back safely to the lighthouse where she and her mom dried and warmed them up.  She went on to save at least 18 more lives and later became the first woman to receive the Congressional American Cross of Honor.
